BWCA Winter Activities
Aside from our great winter cabins, we have many winter activities for visitors. People travel from all over for the world-class ice fishing on Clearwater Lake. The lake trout are massive and all over the lake during the cold months.
Our location is perfect for those who love to snowshoe. Right outside of our cabins is the Daniel Spur trail; a path that leads directly to the Border Route. All you need to do is strap on your snowshoes then head out and you’ve got hours of wonderful snow-filled adventure ahead of you!
Clearwater Lake is known for its excellent lake trout ice fishing. Some real monsters have come out of the lake over the years, including two trophy-sized lakers we have mounted at the lodge. We have visitors coming back year after year to catch trophy sized fish. You may also catch Walleye, Pike, Perch, and other species in nearby lakes. Fish all day, then come back to warm up by the fire in one of our cabins.
If you’ve never gone snowshoeing on the Border Route then you’re missing out! When the powder is fresh and the sun is rising over horizon there’s not a much more beautiful scene on earth. The best part is that there is a spur trail directly to Clearwater’s Cabin 11 to the Border Route, so from the moment you step out of your cabin, you’re just a few steps away from an unforgettable experience! After your snowshoeing adventure, warm up by the fire in your cabin and enjoy the tranquility of the northern winter.
Clearwater is conveniently located near some of the best cross-country skiing in the country. If you are looking for true backcountry, set off to the East, or explore the Border Route. If you would like to spend a day on nice groomed Nordic trails, the Central Gunflint Ski Trail System offers 70 KM of tracked and groomed trails winding through the BWCA, and is only a stone’s throw away. After a fun day on the trail, come back to a hot drink and curl up with a book in your toasty cabin.
