About Us

Clearwater Historic Lodge & Canoe Outfitters is the original outfitter on the Gunflint Trail. We have been helping guests explore the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) for over 100 years.

Clearwater Historic Lodge is a favorite Northwoods getaway destination. Our tranquil setting, beautifully preserved historic lodge, cabins with views of Clearwater Lake and Palisades, laid-back hospitality, hot breakfasts and fresh bakery items are just a few reasons why guests stay with us year after year. We hope you will join us for your next trip up North. Our lodge operates from May through October.

Unwind & Unplug

Clearwater offers a getaway from 21st century living – trade in the constant connectivity for the amber glow of a sunset, good conversations with family or friends, the sound of water gently lapping against the dock, or the whirring sound of a fishing line as it is cast. Our remote location provides a reprieve from texting, emails, and social media for the duration of your stay.

We are aware access to modern convenience is important for guests with families or businesses – WiFi  is available in the main lodge for guests as needed. Note that our property is remote, and does not have cell service.

Clearwater Lodge has been a steward of the BWCA for generations. We are dedicated to preserving the unique landscape, wildlife, and dark skies for generations to come.

Pet-Friendly Cabins

We welome your four-legged family members! Book your stay in one of our pet-friendly cabins (Cabins 1 – 6 are pet friendly) for an additional fee of $20/night per pet or $90/week per pet. Note that pets are not allowed in the main lodge, but service animals are permitted throughout the property. Please keep your pets leashed, and please do not leave them unattended.

Cell Service and Internet

Due to our remote location on the Gunflint Trail, we do not have cell phone reception at Clearwater Historic Lodge. Guest access to our Wireless internet network is available in the lodge, but we ask that you limit your usage due to limited bandwidth. Please do not stream music or movies. We appreciate your cooperation!
