What is the Gunflint Trail?
Originally a foot path for travelers from inland lakes to Lake Superior, the Gunflint Trail was eventually widened into a roadway, and designated as County Road 12 (CR 12). It is now a 57-mile scenic byway beginning in Grand Marais and ending at Saganaga Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and provides access to many BWCA entry points
Do you rent fishing poles?
We keep a few fishing poles on hand you are free to use without charge.
Can I ship things to and from the lodge?
Absolutely. Give us a call or email so we are expecting it. Mail it to 774 Clearwater Rd, Grand Marais, MN 55604.
Is there cell phone coverage on the Gunflint Trail and in BWCA?
There is little to no cell phone coverage on the Gunflint Trail and in surrounding Boundary Waters wilderness.
What comes with a motorboat rental?
Our 16’ V-hull Lund motorboats come with 9.9 horsepower Honda 4-stroke motors, and our 14’ V-hull Lund motorboats with with 8 horsepower Honda 4-strok motors. All boats come with a full 5-gallon tank of gas, oars, an anchor and a BWCA day use motor permit.
How many people can fit in the motor boats?
Our 16’ V-hull Lund motorboats can fit 5 people or 1150 lbs. Our 14’ V-hull Lund motorboats can fit 4 people or 1000 lbs.
What kind of fish are in Clearwater Lake?
Lake Trout and Smallmouth Bass.
Are there places to fish from shore on Clearwater Lake?
Not really, although all of our cabins have private docks and there is a public dock in front of the lodge which provides great opportunities to fish. The BWCA campsites on Clearwater Lake would be the only other options to fish from shore.
Can I bring my own motorboat and how far down Clearwater Lake can I it?
Yes, you can bring your own motorboat and take it down the length of Clearwater Lake as long as it has a motor size under 10 horsepower. The first 1.5 miles of the lake are outside the BWCA and this is the only part of the lake you can use a motor that is larger than 9.9 horsepower. All of the motorboats available for rent are allowed down the entire length of the lake.
Do I need a permit to use a boat in the Boundary Waters?
Yes, and no. If you are bringing your personal motorboat you will need a day use motor permit which can be obtained in person at the main lodge, or in advance from recreation.gov. If you are renting one of our motorboats you do not need a day use motor permit as our boats are exempt.
Can I bring my own canoe or kayak?
Yes.
Do I need to register my motorboat, canoe or kayak in Minnesota if I am bringing it from out of state?
No, any watercraft that is currently registered in another state and not kept in Minnesota for more than 90 consecutive days is exempt from registering with the Department of Natural Resources.
What is included in the cabins?
Pretty much everything we could think you might need including bedding, towels, paper products and kitchen supplies and utensils. Here is a full list of what is provided.
