Charlie’s Hand-Made Furniture

The Clearwater Historic Lodge was built with hand-hewn logs by Charlie Boostrom in 1926, and today it is listed on the National Historic Register. Charlie’s skills as a master builder were well known around the region, and he was often called on by locals for his expertise.

But Charlie’s handiwork and talents did not end with the structure itself. Did you know Charlie also created all the furniture in the lodge?  Even today the Clearwater Historic Lodge is filled with his beautiful hand-made chairs, tables, chests of drawers, and other items.  Much of his furniture was crafted out of locally foraged diamond willow, coveted by artisans for its irregular structure and white-and-red diamond coloring.

Back in Charlie’s day, there were 14 bedrooms in the lodge. Charlie was superstitious and would never let guests stay in number 13.  Instead, he used 13 to store the willow, tree stumps and burls to dry and cure until his next project.

It’s said that the original dining room furniture was purchased from a manufacturer, but after only a few seasons, it started to break down from the wear and tear. Charlie felt he could do better!  He replaced the store bought tables and chairs with his own tables which  he crafted from tree stumps and simple chairs he made to last with sturdy pieces of wood.  They’ve stood the test of time.
